How to Have a Self-Confident 2018

Ever since I can remember, my mom has always drilled it into me that I should be happy with myself and love the way God created me. It’s really hard to be content with the way you look, especially with how society works today.

Society has a strict set of rules about beauty and what “pretty” means. To me, being beautiful means that you have to believe you’re beautiful. When we look at magazines with celebrities and models on the covers, we see a stereotype for beauty. We see women with long legs, and thin figures. But that doesn’t mean that just because you may not have the same body as Kendall Jenner, you’re not beautiful in your own way. We are all beautifully unique. However, it seems impossible to always feel good about yourself and the way you look. Here are some of my tips that have really worked for me on how I gained my self-confidence and learned to be happy with the way God made me, and make peace with my mirror.

Tip #1: I think a really important thing about gaining self-confidence is surrounding yourself with people who are positive, and will lift you up, rather than bring you down. You should always feel good when you’re around people who you consider your friends. You should never feel put-down, or less than, or bad about yourself. Your friends should be the people who you can go to when you’re having a bad day. Your true friends can tell when your feeling bad and negative about yourself, and they can always make you feel better. And a real friend will even let you know if you might be wrong about something.

Tip #2: When you feel bad about yourself, think about how lucky you are. Think about all of the people who aren’t nearly as blessed as you are. When you are down, try to do something that will help someone less fortunate than you. Doing good makes you feel good. If you can tell somebody is having a bad day, just a simple “hi, I love your outfit!” can make their day and lift your own spirits too!

Tip #3: You do not have to follow everybody else. Just because all the girls at your school might wear Adidas sneakers, that doesn’t mean that YOU have to. Your clothing should always reflect your style and make you feel good. Style is, in my opinion, not just about following trends, but about learning to express yourself in a unique and original way.

Tip #4: YOU do YOU. One of my favorite things to say is “you do you” (there will be a future blog post on this philosophy). You’ve probably already heard this quote before, but I think it really resinates: “Be yourself, because everyone else is already taken”. When you’re unsure about wearing an outfit you love to school, for example, but when you’re wearing the outfit it makes you feel like the best version of yoruself, WEAR IT! Don’t be afraid to do your own thing, because at the end of the day, that’s all you can do!
