make·up - ˈmākˌəp/ - noun
cosmetics such as lipstick or powder applied to the face, used to enhance or alter the appearance.
The definition itself says, “to alter the appearance.” I use makeup, and I use it almost everyday. When someone says they use makeup, that doesn’t always mean that they are insecure and feel the need to hide their flaws. Makeup can be used to enhance, define, darken, etc. Makeup should be something you do because you enjoy doing it. In my opinion, it should be an outlet for self expression.
So many artists are using makeup as a canvas to create unique looks, like these insanely cool looks by makeup artist Marie Dausell (@dausell on Instagram):
Personally, I am a lover of the “natural and glowy” makeup look. Looking back I went through stages. When I first started wearing makeup I was constantly scared that people would see that I was wearing it, because I thought that they would judge me for it. That was in 6th grade. In 7th grade, I started to wear bold eye shadow looks and I started to really play around with different colors and palettes. That was the year I first wore a bright blue lipstick (*cringes). At the start of 8th grade last year I was getting better and better with eye shadow and I stopped caring about what other people thought. If I wanted to wear a bright orange, fiery eye look, I would. As the halfway point of 8th grade was coming closely, I started to really like the “no-makeup-makeup-look.” I began to wear less makeup and go for a more shimmery simple feel. I found a few of my holy grail products during this time also. 8th grade is coming to a close soon, and I have no doubt that my style and creative ideas might change throughout the coming years. I have started to focus a lot more on taking care of my face, and finding products better suited for acne-prone, teenage skin.
Before I end this blog post, here are a few things that have helped me a lot:
1) Don’t wear makeup just because your friends might, do it because YOU want to.
2) If you want to get better at makeup, it takes practice and time.
3) Who cares if people judge you for wearing makeup? Wear it if it makes you happy!
4) The health of your skin should always be a bigger priority than the makeup you put on it. Take care of your skin!
